The Empire on Film: Recasting India from the Raj revival to Lagaan

In JCV Ferreira and Teresa Malafaia (eds.), A Tangled Web: Ideas, Images, Symbols. Lisbon: CEAUL/ULICES, 63-80. In the essay “Outside the Whale” (1984) Salman Rushdie locates a “revisionist enterprise” at the heart of Thatcher’s Britain, the aim of which is the “refurbishment of the Empire’s tarnished image”. While debatable, Rushdie’s arguments will serve a useful purpose in drawing attention to the implications of contemporary revisionist narratives seeking to rework imperial themes (Huggan, 2001). Our main goal in this paper is to detach the term “heritage” from its negative associations with the ideological endorsem*nt of a nationalistic political agenda which some critics have considered intrinsic in these films’ “nostalgic” recreation of the British imperial past. Interestingly for our intentions, Indian cinema has been receptive to the heritage mode of filmmaking. Focusing on the interplay between revision and revival, we will examine the representation of British India and the reversal of the exoticisation of colonial history in Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (Gowariker, 2001), a Bollywood heritage film.

The Enigmatic Nature of Shakespeare’s The Tempest

Prospero in Shakespeare's last play, The Tempest, written around 1611 and first published seven years after the dramatist’s death, in 1623, is not a duke who has failed in his task of ruling, but a man who has gained power to direct and discipline others. To that sense, he tends to be the god-man like who rightly castigates and strictly scourges. The magician appears to be so humane at times and too harsh at other times that he dazzles, leads astray or terrifies the island’s dwellers, an ambivalent mission that further intensifies the enigmatic nature of the play. While he has intentionally raised a storm to cause the disorder of the drunken sailors' minds and bodies, thus leaving them on shore at the mercy of chance, instead of winds and waves as before, he has laboriously established order towards the end of the play. 'A well-dressed actress': Exploring the Theatrical Wardrobe of Ellen Terry',

A leading actress of the late nineteenth century, Dame Ellen Terry (1847–1928) exercised an unusual degree of control over her theatre costumes and played an active role in the design and creation of these garments. Drawing upon evidence gathered from a wide range of material culture sources, most notably her surviving costumes, this article considers the theatrical, historical, social and artistic context which shaped Terry's theatrical performances and stage dress. Terry's theatre costumes also reflected her personal views on dress, both on and off the stage. Particular attention will therefore be paid to the changes which occurred in Terry's stage dress as her increasing fame and financial independence enabled her to achieve greater control over the design and, importantly, the designers, of her theatre costumes. Through a close analysis of key pieces from Terry's stage wardrobe, this article will draw attention to the important part her theatre costumes played in a wider process of self-fashioning in which Terry used her dress, both on and off the stage, to establish her status as an 'Icon of Aestheticism' and secure her enduring legacy as an actress who understood the 'art' of theatre.

Existential crisis in the light of Patriarchy: A critical analysis of female characters in Anuradha Roy's An Atlas of Impossible Longing

Patriarchy serves as the nucleus in almost all the communities in Indian society irrespective of the various social hierarchies. Since ages the Patriarchal system has been so dominant over women to an extent that in the process, they themselves have developed a mindset that they are just born to suffer at the hands of men. Life to them is just to have a mere existence only for the sake of performing duties and responsibilities be it in the form of a mother, a wife, a daughter or a sister. In the confinement of imposed Patriarchal norms, the women have developed a sense of loss of their individuality as a gender. The Patriarchal system is so deeply rooted that it will take years and years to uproot it on the ground level. At least through literature writers are able to express the unexpressed and globalise the issues. Probably Roy’s observances about the society and women have been so minute that she has been able to address the issue so realistically from a female’s perspective. Moreover, Roy’s characters seems so real along with a good story- telling that one can easily identify themselves with all the mentioned issues in real life. The paper seeks to address the pain and sufferance of women in the realm of Patriarchy through Anuradha Roy’s An Atlas of Impossible Longing.

Facebook Could Motivate EFL Learners to Develop Genre Based Writing Skills: A Study on Bangladeshi Undergraduate Learners’ Emersion in Free Writing Space

It is observed that EFL learners from mainstream education taking admission in different undergraduate programs at different public and private universities in Bangladesh are very weak in L2 writing. Because of the HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate Examination in Bangladesh) question pattern and traditional methods of teaching, it is observed that almost ninety percent students are weak in free writing in L2. The learners do not have any idea of different genre of writing in L2. It is also found that the learners are not motivated enough to write in L2. They somehow try to avoid the writing from their creativity. Often teachers complain that the learners take much time than they are given to complete the writing, since they did not get enough opportunity to practice creative writing in the class room. However, they need extensive writing skills at university level in L2. Therefore, the teachers of undergraduate programs are facing a challenge to develop their writing skills in L2. It has also been observed that because of limited vocabulary, the newcomers cannot write according to the requirements. To help these students, the researchers have observed that proper guided Facebooking can motivate students to write L2 on their own. For this research, the researchers will go through mixed method research. The researchers have collected data through a questionnaire for teachers, a questionnaire for students and interviews. The findings of the research will definitely help both the teachers and students at undergraduate level.
