How Your Texas Paycheck Works

Good news, Texas is one of the few places in the US that does not have a state income tax. This means you get to keep more of your hard-earned money.

However, no state income tax does not mean no taxes at all. There are still some other factors that affect your take-home pay, such as federal income tax, Social Security tax, Medicare tax, and any voluntary contributions you may have.

Federal income tax is a progressive tax that depends on your filing status, income level, and more. Generally, the more you make, the more federal income tax will be withheld from your paycheck.

To make sure that your employer withholds the correct amount of federal taxes from your paycheck, you'll need to fill out a Form W-4 when you start a new job or when your personal or financial situation changes. This form tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from your paycheck based on your filing status and other factors. A properly filled Form W-4 can help you avoid underpaying or overpaying taxes throughout the year.

Since there's no state income tax in Texas, there is no state specific form equivalent to the W-4. One less thing to worry about.

Aside from income tax, there's Social Security tax and Medicare tax, which are also known as FICA taxes. They are mandatory payroll taxes that fund the Social Security and Medicare programs.

Social Security tax is 6.2% of your gross income up to a certain limit ($160,200 in 2023), while Medicare tax is 1.45% of your gross income with no limit. If you earn more than certain limits, you will also pay an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax. Your FICA taxes are then matched by payments from your employer (except for the surtax) on your behalf.

Depending on your job, you may also choose to have voluntary contributions. These are any amounts that you choose to have withheld from your paycheck for various purposes, such as health insurance premiums, retirement savings plans (such as 401(k) or IRA), charitable contributions, or other benefits.

Some of these, like 401(k) contributions, may reduce your taxable income and lower your tax liability since they are pre-tax ones and subtracted from your gross pay before taxes. You might also have post-tax items if any are taken from your net pay after taxes.

Your pay frequency also plays a factor. Think of your paycheck as a cheesecake. The more slices you cut it into, the smaller each slice will be. That said, you still get the same amount of cheesecake in the end. So if you get paid every two weeks, your slices will be thinner and more frequent than if you get paid once a month.
